1 - Decide on the level of quality you want - which will dictate your budget
There are many people making wooden furniture and wooden home décor items in the UK, but only some are true professionals who will tell you the true cost of the project, which includes materials and workmanship. There are so many different types of wood you can use to build with, but we will always recommend the best wood for the job.
Earlier this month we installed this stunning three-seater bench in the grounds of St Mary's Church in March, Cambridgeshire. As it was to be an outdoor wooden furniture piece, we of course had to build it to a very high standard using teak hardwood to ensure it would endure the British weather for decades to come. This bench could have been built with a different wood, such as a softwood, but it wouldn't last - so St. Mary's church ensured the budget matched their vision. We just love the gentle curves on the arms and legs on this bench, don't you?
2 - Decide your preferred timescale
Trust us, the best carpenters won't finish your large scale bespoke project in a matter of a couple of days..... it will take time, but it will be worth it in the end!
Take this project that we completed a few weeks ago. We were asked to build several bespoke wooden book shelves to line three walls in this room - which also happened to be in one of the oldest houses in March. So this meant no drilling into walls and no removing or cutting of skirting boards; plus we had to contend with very uneven walls, floor and ceiling, and some 85 degree corners! However, we love a challenge, so undeterred, we got to work designing and constructing the shelving.
With approximately 70 metres of wooden shelving now available in this room, treated to ensure it matched the colour of the 'old' original house beams as closely as possible; and with the above 'wonky wall' challenges to overcome, you can imagine the time and care it took to complete this project. All that's left now is for the shelves to be filled - we do hope our client has enough books!
3 - Do your research!
Check their website, is it professional and kept up to date? Do they have good reviews on Google? Can you see photo evidence of their work, and their team? Do they have a legitimate address and company number?
